When it comes to travel, Kolkata, The City of Joy has countless options that one can explore during their visit to the city. But, not all travelers are alike, some like old building, some are more interested in rumored stories. If spooky stories about well known public places gets your attention , then read along for the most haunted places in Kolkata –

1. National Library

Apart from the rich literature, the National Library of Kolkata has its own stories to offer to the readers. Many paranormal activities have been recorded in the national library. You might want to ask the guards who are afraid to take night shifts in the library.

2. Putulbari- The House of Dolls

Definitely a front runner in the list of most haunted places in Kolkata. Only few people have managed to gather the courage to reach the upper stories of Putulbari. It is strongly believed by people that on upper stores, there live dark spirits of female creatures. If the history of  rumors be believed, this place was earlier used by rich landlords to exploit poor girls. After exploiting them physically, Land lords used to kill few of them. Their soul still wanders around this place.

3. Lower Circular Road Cemetery

Sir W.H. Mac Naghten who died in Afghanistan was  buried here in this cemetery.  It is said that if his story is narrated anywhere near his grave, the tree near his grave shivers.

4. Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station

Former- Dhakuria Lake, Rabindra Sarovar is a popular landmark in Kolkata. The nearest station to this artificial lake is also named Rabindra Sarobar and is said to have caused many suicides. The passenger of the last train have experienced some unsual activities involving shadow figures which makes this station one of the most haunted places in Kolkata to visit during night.  Some people call it the “Paradise of Suicide”

5. The Royal Calcutta Turf Club
The story of George Williams, a race maniac, and his prized possession a pearl white house. The horse is said to be a long haul horse and had earner many titles for her master. Known as the Queen of Tracks this horse was found dead on the tracks. The Locals call her William Saheb ka sada ghora who seems to be still wandering around the tracks.

6. South Park Street Cemetery


If you are a fan of The Walking Dead, the South park street Cemetery of Kolkata has a story for you. No, there are no zombies walking around the cemetery, however, there have been reports of unusual activities in the cemetery. Weird images captured by the cameras, dizziness, and people falling sick after visiting the cemetery has been some common events in the past few years.

7. The Hastings House


An old establishments in Alipore, the Hastings house is named after the  Governor General Warren Hastings . Presently, its a Women’s College of Calcutta University. Many time the college students have noticed unnatural and spooky activities happening in the university. Reports of a woman being possessed and a boy dying on the football field has made this place one of the most talked about haunted places in Kolkata.

Once owned by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Awadh. The Kolkata dock has a few eerie stories that are lesser known.It is believed by the residents that Nawab’s spirit wanders around the Dock, looking for a revenge from the Britishers.

One of the oldest ghats in central Kolkata, Nimtala Burning Ghat is a well known Hindu crematorium. It is one of those haunted places in Kolkata which known for shamshaan kali puja and Aghoris. People have seen these Aghoris eat remaining flesh of burning pyre and pray to Shamshaan Kali to evoke her.

10. Writers Building


Once the residence of junior servants, the writer’s building is now known as one of the most haunted places in India. The paranormal activities in the building are more frequent than any other place in India. Locals have heard giggles and screams during midnight. There are many vacant rooms in the building, which some people say, holds some secret. Perhaps a door to another world? Or perhaps a cat who is pissed for being locked away.

The employees of Wipro Kolkata had been strictly advised not to visit the 3rd floor. The office is said to bebuilt on a cemetery . Before the IT boom in Salt lake the locality was a vast jungle where many people have committed murder and rape and nobody even noticed. The third floor is said to be haunted by many ghosts.
